The Oakham Curry Club (OCC) is a well respected Institution with multiple international franchises.
The OCC takes pride in searching out the finest Indian restaurants, and providing an impartial review of Curry Houses all over the world. More recently we started our 3rd franchise to find the best Indian restaurant in Shanghai.
Members vote anonymously on 5 categories - and an average score is given to each restaurant we review.
Due to the OCC trying to source out top quality Indian restaurants, Lotus Land of Tianzifang was chosen for the April meet.
The restaurant excelled and meant that Lotus Land moved above Masala Art in the quest for the CHOTY in Shanghai.
Our scores out of 10
Quality 7.9 Service 6.9 Value 7.6 Customer Care 7.1 Atmosphere 7.5
Overall score 7.4
From the scores it is worth starting with the food. The quality of the dishes were highly pleasing with the starters of Onion Bhajis and Vegetable Samosas proving to be both succulent and juicy. The range of mains also provided a different experience to some other establishments in the city. Here there was a distinctive difference in spice from the Lamb Madras to the Shahi Korma, which you would expect of any decent Indian restaurant. The Salmon Masala also provided an interesting twist to the dishes on offer. The portions were generous and is reflected in the high value score for Lotus Land. The only minor issue was the amount of sauces on offer and their relative size to the accompanying dishes.
The service was to a good level with a limited wait on dishes and drinks, whilst there was genuine appreciation for the OCC with several members of staff joining in the obligatory post meal pictures.
The atmosphere was another high point. A great location amidst the pretty lanes of Tianzifang the restaurant itself was nicely busy with all floors having a steady flow of customers. The only negative of the location and the lovely window table that we were given was the smell of the street food from the lanes which could be off putting for those with a sensitive sense of smell.
In summary Lotus Land is ideal for those looking for a good curry in an unpretentious setting. Its focus on quality and value would cause the OCC to highly recommend it to the people of Shanghai.
