Just 3 small steps away from being a "stellar dining experience"...

The Oakham Curry Club (OCC) is a well-respected Institution with multiple international franchises. The OCC takes pride in searching out the finest Indian Restaurants, and providing an impartial review of Curry Houses all over the world. Members vote anonymously on 5 categories - and an average score is given to each restaurant we review. On Friday 10 February, 12 members of the OCC Hong Kong branch visited Ganga’s on Wyndham Street which - with a history going back to 1988 - excited the OCC with the prospect of sampling the delicious dishes that would be served by owner and chef Mr Sanjay given the restaurant’s passion for the highest quality ingredients, immaculate cooking and service with a smile that results in a stellar dining experience. After a great evening, with 67 beers consumed and numerous dishes, in the end, it wasn't a stellar dining experience but was “a good dining experience” – with the restaurant actually receiving a below average 6.77 out of 10 rating from the 12 members of the OCC who frequented the establishment that memorable Friday night. To be fair we had a great evening in Gangas and some members were surprised at the relatively low score however the overall rating was skewed with by 3 issues – firstly and most importantly – the restaurant ran out of kingfisher so our tastebuds were moved from one beer to another throughout the evening. Sorry – thou should not run out of kingfisher when you have a booking for 12 lads on a Friday night! Secondly – the starters appeared and the samosas were a standout and poppadoms crispy. However, despite the majority of the tandoori meat with a wide range of tasty sauces being devoured in an instant by a hungry crowd – one of our members yelled “raw chicken” at which point his chicken tikka starter was quickly taken back to the kitchen where one of the chefs was (hopefully) duly reprimanded. Thirdly – and we believe the biggest contributor to the below average score was that despite the good food, the above average service and customer care, was the price. The bill came to $700+ each which is well above average. I mean, that did include 67 Kingfishers but as one of our esteemed guests pointed out, how much is a Kingfisher! I guess this is due to the restaurant’s prime location however we definitely felt it was priced above some of the competitors and OCC favourites in Central including Bombay Dreams and our Curry House Of The Year (CHOTY), Bindas, which is a short walk away. Whilst the curries were tasty and sauces spicy, the price, the raw chicken and most importantly the lack of kingfisher hurt the rating. Below are some verbatim comments from the members and the proprietary methodology employed to derive the OCC score. “Expensive” “Was swayed by the raw piece of chicken. Samosas were very good though” “Remember to stock up on Kingfisher” Disclaimer: the voting is based on the votes from 12 OCC members who have been through a rigorous selection process to gain entry into the OCC.
