Like fast food, but slow!

On 19th November 2020 the OCC SGP Branch visited Chutney Mary, East Coast Road

Primarily chosen for the fact that CM opens early and allows the OCC to frequent over 2 sittings to maintain social distancing. CM has the look and feel of a canteen with plastic seating and bright lights, but does offer a variety of chats which the OCC were excited to try.

For full transparency, see below scores (out of 10). Restaurants must score an average of 7/10 or above to receive the OCC sticker of recommendation.

Quality: 6.21

Customer care: 6.75

Value: 7.15

Service: 6.72 Atmosphere: 4.7

Overall: 6.31

Chutney Mary IS NOT awarded the much-coveted OCC sticker of recommendation

Per the scores the quality of the food and service was somewhat lacking. This could be excused if you were looking for a ‘fast food’ type experience…and you might well expect as much based on the strip lighting and plastic chair vibes reminiscent of a late 80s kids party at Wimpy. However, for food to be considered ‘fast’ it needs to be…well…fast. This was not the case particularly and this left the OCC feeling like we were compromising on service and quality and atmosphere. It is also worth noting that CM was very quiet on the evening we visited, despite being situated between a number of busy bars and restaurants. One member commented “I Think 5 other curry houses in Siglap would have to close before I would go back.”

In general, members seemed to enjoy the lamb curry as well as the quite flavorful chats which were somewhat of a novelty as we haven’t come across these in other restaurants. Other than that, the curries were forgettable.

Beer was fairly cheap at S$23 for a bucket of kingfishers and main dishes averaged around S$12 each. Quite well priced but not enough to save the experience all things considered
